The liver is an organ of vital importance to human beings, and drinking coffee can be beneficial for the prevention of diseases in this area of the body. There is scientific evidence that coffee protects the liver and reduces the risk of liver cirrhosis by 66%. What do you think? Great, right?
The research was carried out by the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda (USA) and published in the specialized medical journal “Hepatology.” To take advantage of the positive effects of coffee, you should ingest two or more cups of coffee a day.
The sample consisted of almost 30,000 participants over 20 years old, based on data provided by the National Health and Nutrition Survey of the United States (NHANES, 1999-2010). Participants volunteered to complete a questionnaire on their daily coffee consumption habits.
Methodology used for the study
To make the study, the scientists implemented the following methodology:
- Measurement of blood levels with different traits of liver function to determine liver health status.
- Use of markers aminotransferase (ALT), aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase transaminase (GGT).
- Scientists analyzed this data by examining participating volunteers who drank two or three cups of coffee a day in the study.
Results
The data analysis showed that volunteers who drank two or three cups of coffee daily had lower levels of all liver function markers than those who never consumed coffee.
Revealing data
As you can see, the results confirm that coffee consumption is related to a reduction in liver enzyme levels. Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world and one of the most beneficial, but it must be clarified that it is not caffeine that protects the liver but other compounds of the grain.
